A Pontus- Greek empire has dominated the region for a while. Then Turks has been dominating the region around for 500 years. The region was on the path of Asia trade lines. So many traders had a break and they were controlled in the region. We can see the border stations such as Zilkale that was a fortress on the eastern border of East Roman Empire.
