Istanbul Archeology Museum

Istanbul Archeology Museums complex is the first modern archeology museum in Turkey. As it is formed of three sections ( Archeology museum, Old Eastern cultures and Pavilion with tiles), it is named as Istanbul Archeology Museums.

It was opened in 1880’s and Osman Hamdi Bey who was the founder of modern archeology in Turkey was the most important person in order to develop the museum branch. Thanks to efforts of Osman Hamdi Bey, the archeological items were banned to export them to abroad. They were being exhibited in Istanbul.

The archeological items starting from earlier ages to Ottoman culture are being exhibited in different sections.One of the most attractive sections is the Egyptian mummies’ section. It is an interesting experience.

In addition to this sector,we can see the emperor tombs and sarcophagus’. Sculptures from the ancient sites were brought here.

It is located at the historical peninsula of Istanbul. It is a great museum for history lovers.
