Constantinople was the metropolitan city of the ancient period. It had the same value as today’s New York. That’s why it was a developed city. Unfortunately most of those structures are vanished such as the ancient bridge of Constantinople. It is physically vanished but you can see the location of this bridge above.
It was built in 6th century AD. Emperor Justinian I had it built as a bridge with 12 arches.

Istanbul is one of the historical cities of the world. The historical structure of Istanbul reflects on the historical buildings. Golden Horn is one of the stunning destinations of Istanbul city.
Tiding two sides of Golden Horn has been an important task for centuries. Since Istanbul was conquered, the authorities has been dealing with this task. Galata Bridge is the one which ties up two sides of Golden Horn. Although it has planned for centuries, it could be real in 19th century. A bridge was constucted in 1854. It was made of wood. It was reconstructed in 20th century.
It was used till 1992 since it was damaged because of a fire. A new one was commissioned in 1994. It was built as a bridge with opening winds in order to let the ships sail through or out Golden Horn. But due to some technical problems, this bridge couldn’t be used for this purpose so much. Despite the technical problems, it fulfills its task with success; to tie up two sides of Golden Horn.

Conquest of Constantinople was a tough target. Constantinople was the city which was famous for powerful city walls. They were built so well that it couldn’t be collapsed despite the several attacks before 1453. Young sultan of Ottoman State Mehmed II determined to conquer Constantinople in order to unite tge territories of Ottoman State in Europe and Asia continents.
Although the high ranks of Ottoman State objected young sultan, he didn’t listen to them. He started to make preprations for the attack to Constantinople. Young Sultan knew that he had to produce more powetrful weapons including giant cannonballs. He had a master brought to Edirne (the capital before Constantinople) and he had an ironfoundry built nearby Edirne. The giant cannonballs were produced here and they became key weapons to conquer the city.
The ruins of this ironfoundry were unearthed. It is in Thrace region of Turkey. It is one of the samples of war industry facilities in the world. According to the news, this factory will be restored and opened for visit.

It is one of the toughest works for the archeaology because we have to come over the ignorance of years and insufficient policy of the state. Istanbul city has been growing for thousands of years. A new layer has been covering the old one. So many sites and stories were buried. They are expected to unearth in order to reveal the secret of development in this region.
Urbanisation is one of the major issues against this subject. We can consider destroying the old one and building a new civilization as the common behaviour of the human being in the history. It is still going on but today more people are aware of this fact; if we want to build the future, we should look at the past.
For example, earthquakes are the major issues for this region. We should look at the layers of the city and check the earthquake schedule of the region. Actually we have this information but we ignore it unfortunately. Insufficient policy of the state is one of the barriers to solve this problem. We have historical records that give us information on the earthquakes of the region. We still debate on some solutions but no active work.
Do you know that Istanbul has been one of the attraction points in the history? Many tribes and nations visited here even they settled here. Latins and Vikings were some of them. We knew the Latin invasion but Viking existence on the shore of a Istanbul lake told us another interesting story.
You may consider Istanbul as one of the centers where modern world civilization was built. We can look at this city with this perpective.
Listen to Istanbul because it still has many things to to tell us.

Istanbul city is always memorised as one of the capitals of history. Due to the historical background of the city, whenever a project is constructed in Istanbul, we come across archeaological remains from various ages. Mostly the old town of Istanbul is known as the archeaological area but Asian minor of Istanbul isn’t less important than European side and old town. Because this city has always been a puzzle in history. The development and history of the city should be evaluated together.
Asian minor of Istanbul was known as the land of blinds because the public of Chalcedon couldn’t understand the importance of their location. The historical background of Asian minor is dated back to Roman Empire age. This region was one of the important port areas in Roman Empire era. When Roman Empire divided into two parts, This region was under the domination of East Roman Empire. Ports were very important for the trade so the economical life got better. In recent years, some archeaological discoveries were made by the various projects and chance. Although Chalcedon ancient site was known, there hadn’t been any serious archeaological works on it for years. Only some small items were discovered and they were ignored till the restoration of historical Haydarpaşa train station.Chalcedon ancient site was unearthed and we found out that it was more important we think for this city’s historical background. The archeaologists think that it is a small part of Chalcedon ancient site. Most of them are under modern Kadıköy county. An Apollon temple and historical social facilities are well known by the assitance of historical records.
Also other regions of Asian minor such as Üsküdar and inner regions have the same story. They are some samples of ancient settlements of the history. Even before the conquer of Constantinople, the ancient settlements are known around here. Thanks to the railway restoration project, a village of pre-historic age was unearthed in the inner region of Asian Minor.
Briefly Asian minor’s historical background completes the background of old town and European side. It is necessary to follow thew updates in this subject.

As we know that Constantinople was a Roman capital city. So when we think of a Roman capital city, something is missing in today’s ruin; An amphitheater. It means a lot for a capital city. It is thought that there were two amphitheaters in Constantinople. According to the historical records, their locations are estimated but unfortunately a sufficient excavation was never made.
As you see above, it is the location of big one. It is thought that it was on the skirt of the hill where Topkapı Palace was built ( once upon a time, megalo palacio (mega palace) of Byzantium was there). As it is dangerous to excavate the underneath of the palace, the research couldn’t be done.
In addition to big amphitheater, there used to be a small one. An excavation was made for this but some columns and pillars were found. Unfortunately it was never confirmed.

This region has something mysterious in the history. The legends and stories are always existed in this region. Even before Roman era, the public of this strait (for both banks) have mysterious life time.
Even today, we don’t have significant information on pre-historic Istanbul. Archeaology unearths many new hints on the history of the region. In recent time, the archeaologists unearthed the oldest village of the city on Asian Minor of Istanbul. It is thought that it is around 10.000 years old. The excavations of Chalcedon ancient city ( most of the ancient site had been discovered short time ago) proves us that this land is hiding something mysterious about its life time. Chalcedon was established on the Asian minor. Also it is named as ” the land of blinds” because the public of this side couldn’t see the meaning of historical town of old city.
Early residentals left us a few things for us. We have the East Roman Empire era mostly. According to the official news, the history of this city is dated back to pre-historic periods. Those layers are under our feets. Even Marmara sea and Istanbul strait are hiding hints about Istanbul’s history. Briefly Istanbul still has many things to say us.
The only thing we need is a long term archeaological work on the city. This work should compromise both sides of the city.

Historical accommodation facilities that are named as han were the hotels of the past. There are a lot of hans on the Anatolian Peninsula. All of them have the characteristic features of the medieval age.
The Anatolian hans always have a historical value such as Develi Han in Tokat province of Turkey. Develi Han which was constructed in 16th century is one of them.
After it was used by university, it is decided to reuse it as a hotel. Briefly it will turn back its historical background.

Constantinople was the city that was full of legends and stories. Chain of Golden Horn is one of the greatest stories in Constantinople.
Ottoman Sultan young Mehmet II had a target to make the Ottoman State to an empire. Ottoman State had territories on Europe and Asia. The only problem was Constantinople standing in the middle of two continents. Ottoman State had diplomatic affairs with East Roman Empire but never attempted to conquer Constantinople before. Ottoman sultan Mehmet II decided to conquer Constantinople to become a state to an empire despite the objection of military and politician officers.
He did what he was aimed. But he had some military and political issues for his target. This chain which was on the entrance of Golden Horn became the most important barrier due to the strength of the city walls. It wasn’t possible to break it so he had an intelligent plan. He decided to move the ships from the land to the Golden Horn. This legendary move became East Roman Empire shocked because they saw Ottoman Navy in front of Constantinople in one night. This chain couldn’t stop a passsionate man. He got the title Conquerer Sultan Mehmet.
This chain is being exhibited at the naval museum of Istanbul.
